Konstruksi Sosial dan Solidaritas Komunal dalam Ritual Bakar Batu: Sebuah Pendekatan Autoetnografi di Papua
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The Bakar Batu ritual in Papua is not merely a traditional communal feast; it is a social institution that functions to maintain communal cohesion and resolve horizontal conflicts. This article examines the sociological dynamics of the Bakar Batu tradition by combining the researcher's autoethnographic experience as a community member with constructivist sociological analysis. The research employs a qualitative design with an analytic autoethnography approach through participatory observation across all stages of the ritual procession. The findings reveal three mutually reinforcing layers of social work: first, Bakar Batu operates as a sacred canopy that reconstructs a peaceful post-conflict reality and legitimizes social order; second, pig contributions create bonds of reciprocity that reinforce the authority of communal leaders through the conversion of economic capital into symbolic capital; third, its collective celebration produces collective effervescence that strengthens mechanical solidarity and effectively dampens social tensions. The theoretical contribution of this article lies in its synthesis of three macro-sociological frameworks — Berger-Luckmann constructivism, Bourdieu's field theory, and Durkheim's solidarity — into an integrated analytical model for understanding the mechanisms of indigenous reconciliation in Papuan Highland communities. This synthesis extends our understanding of local wisdom as a conflict resolution system operating simultaneously at cognitive, political-economic, and emotional levels.
